Jill Scott, the daughter of Joyce Scott in Philadelphia Pennsylvania was born April 4th April 1972. Scott was raised as an only daughter by her maternal grandmother. Scott was a student at the Philadelphia High School for Girls as well as Temple University after graduating. Scott studied secondary school education as well as working two other job. She was hoping to be an English teacher at high school. After 3 years of working as an aide to the teacher and a student, her dream to become a high school English teacher came to a halt. Following her first gigs doing live poetry shows She eventually joined forces with Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. The two ended up working together and co-writing You Got Me. Through the Roots performance, she declared her artist status. Afterward she secured collaborations with stars like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. Also, she was a performer on The Canada tour of the Broadway musical Rent. She was the first artist to be signed by Hidden Beach Recordings.
